Basket Weaving in New York City

Basket Making in New York City, Tips on Where to Buy Starter kits

You know we’re all about handmade magic here at Craftspring! Recently, our team tried something totally new: basket weaving! And let us tell you—it was such a beautiful mix of learning, laughter, and creative chaos.

We had the joy of welcoming a talented teacher from Underwater Weaving into our studio, who guided us through the basics. Even though we’re a team of artsy crafters, this was a fresh challenge. It turns out that weaving a basket is not as simple as it looks—but it is just as rewarding.

A team member works with our instructor on weaving a basket at a wooden table. One person laughs joyfully while the other points at a section of the woven base, guiding the next steps. Strips of reed are fanned out around the basket-in-progress, held in place with clothespins. The background shows a cozy, art-filled workspace.

A Basket for Every Personality

From the moment we dipped our reed into water and began shaping our bases, it was clear we were each going to take our own path. Some of us leaned into symmetry and precision, while others went full-blown chaos (in the best way possible). By the end, each basket had its own unique personality—some tall and tidy, others chunky and whimsical, all of them perfect in their own way.

And because we can’t resist a little flair, a few of us even added cute little charms to the handle.

A Craft as Old as Time

Weaving baskets felt deeply grounding, like connecting with something ancient. Basket weaving is one of the oldest art forms known to humanity, spanning cultures and continents throughout history. While the natural materials used—like reeds, grasses, and bark—don’t always stand the test of time, basket fragments and depictions date back thousands of years.

What’s amazing is how this tradition lives on. From practical tool to cultural symbol to expressive art, basket weaving is both ancient and evolving, with artisans continuing to preserve traditional techniques while experimenting with modern twists.

Want to Try Basket Weaving Yourself?

We highly recommend it—for friends, families, and, of course, team bonding! It’s tactile, meditative, and surprisingly forgiving. Whether you're a seasoned crafter or trying something new, basket weaving is a rewarding project for all ages.

Here are a few great resources for beginners and curious makers:

  • Adirondack Basketry: Beautiful kits and supplies with clear instructions for all levels.

  • Gray Mist Studio: A charming shop and studio based in Boston, offering kits, classes, and materials.

  • Sanborn Mills Farm: A heritage center in New Hampshire with immersive workshops on traditional crafts, including basketry.

Seven smiling Craftspring team members pose indoors, each holding a handmade woven basket they created during a basket weaving workshop. The group is surrounded by plants, craft supplies, and warm wooden decor. Two team members kneel in front, while five stand behind them, proudly displaying their finished baskets.

Whether you end up with a perfectly plaited basket or a slightly wobbly masterpiece, what matters is the process. We walked away from the experience feeling connected—not just to each other, but to the long lineage of makers who’ve shaped and woven the world with their hands.

And yes, we’re already planning our next weaving adventure. More to come soon!
