Quilted Afghan Stocking

Made in close partnership with an artisanal Afghan textile and fashion house based in Kabul called Zarif Design our Quilted Afghan Christmas Stocking is made by courageous women seamstresses working from the Zarif studio and from their homes. This delicately modern stocking is made from handwoven wool fabric with quilted and embroidered details.

Zarif has been employing and training women and girls for the past 17 years in Afghanistan, providing their community of artisans and seamstresses continued, stable work and employment. We partnered with Zolaykha Sherzad, the founder of Zarif, to design a Holiday collection. We used signature elements from the fashion house's beautiful coats and jackets to design a collection made for the Christmas Tree and Mantle. With intricate embroidery details, delicate Bouti quilting, hand-cast traditional metal buttons, and other spectacular details, our collection reflects the beauty and power of ancient traditions that continue to this day as an enduring symbol of human creativity, resilience and connection.

A Little Piece of Tradition, Stitched with Love

The natural-colored fabric is handwoven in Afghanistan using locally hand-spun wool yarn, then adorned with delicate geometric stitching inspired by traditional European textile patterns. A rich navy blue cuff features intricate Bouti embroidery, a dimensional quilting technique inspired by the shared textile traditions of Afghanistan and Provence, France. Finished with a decorative cross-stitched border and a matching hanging loop, every detail tells a story of skill, heritage, and creativity.

Lovingly handcrafted by skilled Afghan artisans, including women working from their homes and young women trained through Zarif's educational program, each stocking helps preserve traditional embroidery techniques while supporting meaningful opportunities for women in Afghanistan. Zarif Design is a social enterprise based in Kabul, Afghanistan that empowers artisans with dignity and economic sustainability by reviving the ancient traditions and skills of weaving, embroidery, and tailoring.  At its core Zarif acts as an ambassador sharing the rich cultural heritage of Afghanistan and its people with the rest of the world.
