Ever wonder how all of our ridiculously cute and totally magical felted friends get from Kyrgyzstan to Brooklyn? We received a shipment this month of approximately 14,000 felted friends packed in three, tyvek and metal wire-wrapped bundles.
Bishkek → Istanbul → New York City
The finished ornaments are arranged in plastic bags before leaving the various workshops to be packaged for shipping. These ornaments are then taken to our logistics manager Begimai, where they are wrapped up in tyvek to create the shipping bundles (approx. 2 x 3.5 x 2.5 ft). These bundles are taken to the Dordoi Market where they are wrapped up with metal wire for fortification. Now they are ready to be shipped, Begimai takes the packages with our local driver, Sergei, to the Turkish Airlines freight office at the Bishkek International Airport. Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country. We ship air cargo directly from Bishkek as opposed to having our goods taken to Pakistan and then traveling by sea.
The packages transit through Istanbul and arrive at JFK International Airport. Customs are cleared by our amazing customs broker, Cathy. Cathy arranges for them to be delivered, by truck, to our office in Brooklyn where they are ceremoniously dropped in the front yard! (We used to pick them up ourselves at the customs warehouse, but the shipments got too big to fit into our Craftspring van).
Take a look as we unwrap the packages outside our office so we can bring them in :) We fill big bags with the ornaments to bring them up to the office, creating a gigantic pile of cuteness. This day was particularly stormy, but luckily we beat the rain!
